Teach Flu A Lesson (TFAL) will be at our school on Wednesday, September 3, from 8 - 9:30. TFAL is an optional free flu vaccine clinic that travels to many schools to offer convenient and free flu vaccination to students. Uninsured students are vaccinated free. Students with health insurance are not charged a copay but their insurance companies will be billed by TFAL. Students covered by PEEHIP should not participate in TFAL vaccine clinics. The ADPH Wellness Clinic will provide this service during their late Oct/Nov on-site visits.
Most participating students will receive FluMist, a pain free nasal vaccination (squirts in their nostril).
The Center for Disease Control recommends the flu injection in certain situations.
Parents should contact 1-205-609-0268 for recommendations and the appropriate consent form if their child has one of the following health conditions: asthma,
diabetes or other metabolic disorder
left threatening EGG, gentamicin, or MSG allergy
previous reaction to previous flu vaccine
History of Guillain-Barre' Syndrome
have received another vaccine in the last 4 weeks
heart disease or disorder
kidney disease or disorder
blood disease or disorder
takes long term aspirin therapy
has a lowered resistance to infection
has close contact with some with a severely compromised immune system (transplant, chemo, etc.)
Parent consent forms will be sent home the week of August 18th. Completed forms should be returned to homeroom teachers no later than August 26th.
FLU TIDBITS
1. Flu viruses are always changing. Each year's flu vaccine is manufactured based on the 4 flu strains expected to be most common during our upcoming flu season.
2.Vaccine manufacturing takes about 6 months.
3.The flu vaccine can not prevent all cases of flu but is our best defense against flu illness. Because flu strains are ever changing the vaccine is recommended yearly.
4. It takes about 2 weeks for protection to develop after the vaccination. Protection last several months to a year.
5. Some illnesses not caused by influenza virus are mistaken for the flu. Flu vaccination will not protect against these illnesses.
Thank you for considering participation, healthy students make better learners,
Nurse Kandy
